Soap nuts are practically everything that all of the major detergent companies are attempting to build chemically for HE washers. Soap nuts do it naturally, without the use of synthetic chemicals. The fundamental goal of a superb HE detergent is to have a minimal suds, effective surfactant. (In case you didn't know, a surfactant is an agent or substance that lowers the surface tension of liquids so that they spread out instead of collecting in droplets, allowing for easy flow through water and facilitating the removal or release of dirt, oils, grime, and other contaminants from fabrics.) Soap nuts are exactly what they sound like.
A fascinating element to bear in mind is that most HE washers feature a maintenance cycle that should be used to maintain the machine running at maximum efficiency.
I recommend forgetting about the compartments, but again experimentation is the only way to know what works best for YOU. The compartments and their dispersion method just create more variables because each machine operates differently. I recommend simply putting the wash bag of soap nuts, the powder or liquid directly in with your laundry. You can forget about the fabric softener department completely since you don't need fabric softeners at all when using soap nuts. If you are using soap nuts in the traditional method (soap nuts in a wash bag) definitely make a cup of soap nut tea and pour the tea and bag right in with your laundry.
